My story & history behind the brand
I graduated from East Sydney School of Fashion in the late 70’s this is where I learnt pattern making, construction & fashion design. After completing my course I then travelled through Europe, setting in the south of Spain where l spent 3 fantastic years. I lived in a small town call Los Boliches near Fuengirola on the Costa Del Sol. I Did all sorts of interesting jobs, I was hostesses at ‘Lew Hoad’s Campo de Tenis’ I taught swimming at a luxury hotel in Marbella called Hotel Los Monterous’, I made ‘Head bands & belts’ and sold them in the local markets and to the boutiques along the ‘Costa Del Sol’ l learnt to speak Spanish from local, I learnt to cook, dance flamenco and most of all, l lived like a local, I loved Spain it was a wonderful experience.
I returned to Sydney in the early 80’s and set up my first Australian fashion accessory business call ‘Belt Affair’. As time progressed I set up my own factory on Kippax St Surry Hills Sydney, which is the heart of the rag trade area, I changed the name to ‘The Accessory Factory’ All was rosy until 1995 when the Federal government introduced ‘The Button plan’ which was the reduction of import duties to Australia, this caused a flood of cheap imports coming into Australia, it effected many industries not just the rag trade. I struggled trying to keep my Australian manufacturing business alive. It was extremely difficult to compete against the new cheap import prices. In 1997 I went on a trip around the world in search for new trends, looking for an answer to save my Australian manufacturing business. When I got home, I went for a walk down the beach, I said to my ‘then’ husband, I have ideas but I don’t think they are enough to make the business survive, I was leaning on the railing overlooking Bondi Beach, deep in thought about where I had just been and what I’d seen. Then the penny dropped, I pushed myself back from the railing and said ‘that’s it, I’ve got it! I love Bondi Beach, I’m going to create ‘Bondi Beach Bag Co. I raced home and wrote my mission statement. I had travelled all around the world spending a load of money I didn’t have and the answer was right under my nose. l was forced to move with the times, sadly I closed my Australian factory and took my new production off shore to China to be market competitive. In the summer of 1997 Bondi Beach Bag Co was born.
